Bone Density Testing

LMXR Mobile X-Ray Inc. is able to provide our customers with osteoporosis screenings utilizing our state of the art peripheral doxa scan equipment. This compact, easily transportable unit is ideal for the provision of this service in the mobile setting.
Manufactured by Norland Corporation, the worldwide leader in densitometry equipment, our Apollo model provides quick, easy assessment of bone density at the heel in just a few seconds.
Bone density results are calculated automatically and instantly printed out in a comprehensive, full color report with precise bone
density measurement in grams per square centimeter, as well as a graph which compares the patient's bone density against a reference population.

Many long term care facilities are viewing peripheral bone densitometry as a valuable aide in their facility's Quality Assurance program. Establishing a baseline bone density for their residents who are at risk for osteoporosis can be extremely beneficial in explaining the occurrence of fractures which occur without apparent injury or known trauma. Every long term care Director of Nursing has experienced the unstated, yet underlying cloud of suspicion with which surveyors seem to view these situations, as though there were some sort of ulterior motive on the nurse's part in not documenting an injury, when in fact, the fracture may have been due to osteoporosis rather than abuse or injury.

Also from a QA perspective, with the availability of remarkable new pharmaceutical therapies which have proven to be very effective in restoring lost bone density, peripheral dexa scan is a valuable diagnostic tool in identifying those residents who are strong candidates for pharmaceutical intervention and then for followup screening to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment over time.

OSTEOPOROSIS: "Are you at risk?"

Osteoporosis is a progressive bone thinning disease that can lead to serious fractures of the hip, spine and wrist. It is a complex disease and not all causes are known. However, when certain risk factors are present, your likelihood of developing osteoporosis is significantly increased. It is known that certain lifestyle choices (over which one does have control) can contribute to depletion of minerals from your bones. Your answers to the following questions can help to determine your risk for developing osteoporosis:

1 . Are you of either Caucasian or Asian in race?
YES
NO

2. Do you have a small, thin frame?
YES
NO

3 . Has a female member of your family broken a bone as an adult?
YES
NO

4. Are you a postmenopausal woman?
YES
NO

5 . Have you had either an early natural menopause or a surgically induced menopause? YES
NO

6. Have you been taking high or prolonged doses of thyroid medication or any cortison-like, drugs for asthma, arthritis or other diseases?
YES
NO

7. Is your diet low in dairy products and other sources of calcium?
YES
NO

8 . Are you physically inactive or guilty of not exercising regularly?
YES
NO

9. Do you smoke?
YES
NO

10 . Do you consume alchohol and/or caffeine on a regular basis?
YES
NO

The more times you answered "YES" to the above questions, the greater your risk for developing osteoporosis. The disease does not wait until you are "old" to start. Many people, particularly females, have already begun to lose bone mass as early as their twenties.
